In Jun 2010, UNEP (UN Environment Program) published a report
““Accessing the Environmental Impacts of Consumption and Production:
Priority, Product and Materials”. The report studies how our
consumption patterns impacts the Environment.

The UN panel gathered many scientists to provide science-based
assessments of how products, materials and economic and lifestyle
activities, impacts the planet. It is the first global assessment to
determine which type of consumption activities have the biggest impact
on the environment.

The purpose of this U.N. Environment Programme-sponsored study was to
identify the "hot spots" in terms of environmental impacts so that
policy makers can use this information to reform policies

Summary of UNEP Jun 2010 report:
· Two broad areas are currently having a disproportionately
high impact on people and the planet's life support systems-these are
1) Energy in the form of fossil fuels and 2) Agriculture, especially
the raising of livestock for meat and dairy products.

· A doubling of wealth leads to a 60% to 80% increase in CO2
emissions. (In emerging economies, increase in CO2 emissions are even
higher.)

· Rising affluence had triggered a shift in diets towards meat
and dairy products- livestock now consumes much of the world's crops
and by inference a great deal of freshwater, fertilizers and
pesticides linked with that crop production in the first place

· Agricultural goods, particularly products from animals,
which are fed more than half of all world crops, have a huge impact on
the planet. Agricultural production accounts for 70% of the global
freshwater consumption and 38% of the total land use. Food production
accounts for 19% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions and 60% of
the phosphorus and nitrogen pollution and 30% of toxic pollution in
Europe

· In most countries, household consumption, over the life
cycle of the products and services, accounts for more than 60% of all
impacts of consumption.

The report recommends the following:
· “Decoupling growth from environmental degradation is the
number one challenge facing governments. “ However, the report shows
that this decoupling is not happening, and it will not happen in the
future without strong policy interventions.

· “A Substantial reduction of impacts would only be possible
with a substantial worldwide diet change away from animal products.”
The report calls for a significant shift in diets away from animal
based proteins towards more vegetable-based foods in order to
dramatically reduce pressures on the environment.

SPRING Singapore GW lunch-talk (01 Dec)

Ms Ariel Lee, Senior Officer from Textile & Apparel Department of SPRING Singapore, invited Mr Low to conduct a GW company lunch talk on 01 Dec to 30 staffs from SPRING.

For this special event, Ms Ariel Lee catered vegetarian food from Loving Hut (a local Vegan restaurant) for the staffs.

The lunch talk was held at Solaris building, an elegant white-and-blue building with space-age design. While looking at the building, Mr Low felt that humans who are capable of designing and building such elegant structures should be able to work together to halt global warming and secure a future for mankind.

The following are some Feedbacks for the GW talk:

Mr Low is a good speaker, friendly and interactive while conducting the talk. The talk creates an awareness of the seriousness of global warming and provided solutions to reduce global warming. It encourage people to eat more veg / less meat and promotes a “Go Green” environment. Comprehensive materials such as handouts and DVDs are given out to participants after the talk.

Pro-teach Event @ 8 treasures (25 Nov)

On 25 Nov, Pro-teach CEO, Ms Peggy Ong, invited Mr Ganga (Chief Editor of VegeVibe Magazine), Mr Low & Dr Priya to 8 Treasures vegetarian restaurant to speak to 50 Pro-teach staffs.Mr Ganga presented on Kindness to animals, Mr Low spoke on Global Warming & Solutions to climate change and Dr Priya discussed with the staffs about the Health benefits of a Vege diet.

Pro-teach staffs enjoyed a 9-course veggie lunch as they learnt about the environmental and health benefits of a plant-based diet from the various speakers.

Pro-teach management team gave the following comments on the GW talk:

GW Booth & Seminar @ Singapore Polytechnic (16 Nov)

On 16 Nov, Singapore Polytechnic Environment club invited GW study group to set up a booth @ SP to promote environmental awareness to SP students. We set up a booth from 10am till 3:30pm. Mr Low conducted a GW presentation to 25 students from 3:30 till 5pm. SP students listened very attentively during the seminar.

GW Booth @ Woodlands Ring Primary school (15 Nov)

GW study group was invited by Ms Mazlindah to set up a booth at Woodlands Ring Primary School’s Science Carnival on 15 Nov. Neighbouring Primary schools such as Innova Primary, Admiralty Primary, Sembawang Primary also set up booths to display their science projects. We networked with the teachers of various schools during the carnival. Many teachers showed concern for the environment and some school were interested to invite us to conduct assembly talks for 2012.

Assembly Talks and Booth @ Northland Primary School (11 Nov)

Mrs Prema Suresh, Environment co-ordinator in Northland Primary School, invited GW Study group to conduct Assembly talks and set up a booth in the NL Primary on 11 Nov.

At the request of the school, Mr Low conducted 2 Global Warming Assembly talks:
- A primary school version for P3 to P6 students from 11 to 11:30am &
- A simplified version for P1 & P2 students from 1:30pm to 2pm.
Both talks are followed by a quiz, where students had a chance to win prizes when they answered questions correctly.

Students and teachers enjoyed the assembly talks & the quiz very much.

GW team set up a booth to distribute Eco-Kid websites and climate change information to students and teachers. We manned the booth from 9am to 2:30pm.

Assembly Talk and Booth @ New Town Primary school (09 Nov)

Ms Janice Lum Jia En, Teacher-in-charge of Environment in New Town Primary School, invited Global Warming Study Group to NTPS on 09 Nov 2011.

Mr Low conducted an Assembly talk to the school from 1:00 to 1:30pm. The talk was well-received.

Our GW team set up Exhibition panels and a booth in New Town Primary. We distributed leaflets on ‘Eco-kids websites’ & MRT card holders to students and played some SOS climate change videos on TV. We manned the booth from 11am to 3pm.

GW Workshop at NTU (09 Nov)

On 09 Nov, NTU lecturer, Professor Patrick Chan, invited Mr Low to NTU to conduct an evening Global Warming Workshop to 50 undergraduates. These undergraduates are working adults who are taking a 5-year evening course to complete their EEE degree.

These intellectual adults pay full attention to the workshop and interacted very well with Mr Low. Some of the undergraduates express interest in inviting Mr Low to their company to conduct lunch talks after the workshop. : )

GW Seminar at NTU (01 Nov)

NTU lecturer, Professor Patrick Chan, invited Mr Low to NTU to conduct a Global Warming Seminar to 180 undergraduates. The undergraduates are year 4 students for EEE (Electrical & Electronics Engineering) course at NTU.

Green Drinks NCCS Climate change Strategy Discussion held at TAB, Orchard Road. ( 27 Oct )

On 27 Oct, Green Drinks Singapore, a famous local green group, organized a large 10-member panel discussion forum to gather feedback from business/ community/ academia/ NGOs on Singapore's National Climate Change Strategy 2012. The discussion was specially organised in consultation with the National Climate Change Secretariat (in the Prime Minister's Office).

The panel members include representatives from Biosphere Foundation, A*STAR, NUSDNV Clean Technology Centre, Halcyon Group, Alpha Biofuels, evHUB, Low Carbon SG / Green Future Solutions & Singapore Environment Council.Ms Jessica Cheam from Straits Time is the moderator of the forum.

Global Warming Study group attended the meaningful public forum to join in the discussion.

During the discussion, Mr Low posed a question on Green Diet:
“A lot of the time, the debate (on climate change) is centred around the energy issue. There’s another side of the issue, which is agriculture. The green and sustainable Economy needs green energy, but also a green diet. Meat production causes a lot of greenhouse gases and it is an inefficient way of using the world’s resources. Meat production causes about 20% of Global Green house gas emissions. Climate scientists like the Director of NASA, Dr James Hansen, and UN IPCC Chairman Dr Rajendra Pachauri have asked people to adopt a plant based diet, saying it is the fastest action each individual can do to make an impact. Meat production also uses a lot of water, food and land. Meat production uses 20 to 80 times more water and 2 to 8 times more food compared to vegetable production. 1 hectare of land can feed 1 omnivore or 80 vegans. Thus, a lot of people are adopting Meatless Monday or Meatless Thursday to help reduce green house gas and reduce resource consumption. I would ask the panel your views on that.”

Mr Eugene Tay from Low Carbon SG/ Green Futures Solutions, answers:
“Going vegetarian has to be a personal choice. It cannot be forced top down, but bottom up, and so we’ve seen movements like Meatless Monday or Veggie Thursday. Beef is the most carbon intensive of them all. If you can’t go vegetarian, just don’t eat beef.”

Bedok Green Sec Sch Env Club GW presentation (25 Oct)

Mrs Tang-Lee, teacher-in-charge of Environment Club in Bedok Green Secondary school, invited Mr Low to give a GW presentation to club members on 25 Oct.

Club members paid full attention to the presentation as they have to answer some Quiz questions by the end of the presentation. : )

裕华民众俱乐部《爱护地球，了悟健康》晚会（10月15日）

全球暖化研究小组成员受邀参加裕华民众俱乐部《爱护地球，了悟健康》晚会。组员伟滔和婷婷全权负责策划晚会节目内容和筹备晚会的各个事项。组员李绕和刘先生参与环境短剧《小孩与大树》的演出。

《爱护地球，了悟健康》晚会在10月15日举行。筹备工作/戏剧排练在8月中就开始了。组员每个星期都到裕华民众俱乐部和一群志同道合的大学生一起排练短剧。环境短剧《小孩与大树》讲述一个小男孩从小受到苹果树的恩惠，长大后却从事养牛场的工作（破坏了环境），但后来悔改，从事保护环境/种植蔬菜水果的工作的故事。组员和大学生们都用心排练，希望能把环保讯息传达给民众。

《爱护地球，了悟健康》晚会当天，350位民众出席晚会。晚会节目非常丰富，有环保舞蹈表演、环境短剧、传统戏剧、健康讲座、幸运抽奖等等。晚会当天的晚宴是由“爱家”餐馆提供的9道美味素食。大家都对色香味俱全的素食晚宴赞不绝口。

晚会嘉宾新闻、通讯及艺术部兼环境及水源部高级政务部长傅海燕女士（Ms Grace Fu）非常喜欢《爱护地球，了悟健康》晚会的主题内容，并提议每年都举行类似的环保晚宴。裕华民众俱乐部，乐龄委员会的会长王先生也认为今年的环保晚宴办得朝气蓬勃、青春活力，极俱特色。他还邀请我们明年再和裕华民众俱乐部一起联办环保晚宴呢。

Ms Pavri Goritti-Ann, Teacher-in-charge of Environment club, invited Global Warming Study Group to CHIJ Primary school on 14 Oct 2011.
Mr Low, dressed as Professor Amjit, conducted an Assembly talk to the school during 7:20 am. The talk was very well-received.

As 14 Oct was a CCA day, Ms Pavri invited Mr Low to give an ‘extra’ session to the CHIJ Environment club. : ) Mr Low showed some environment videos and gave the club members some quiz questions where they can win some prizes. Club members loved the environment session.

Our GW team arrived at 9.30am to set up Exhibition panels and a booth. We distributed leaflets on ‘Eco-kids websites’ & MRT card holders to students and played some SOS climate change videos on the TV. We manned the booth from 9.30am till 2pm.
Our booth was swamped by the students as many of them like the assembly talk we delivered. We are quite overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response from the students. : ) Team members heartedly commented that we should do more talks in schools. : )

Ms Gan Geok Hong, a lecturer in ITE Tampines, invited Global Warming Study group to conduct a GW seminar and set up a booth at ITE Tampines to promote environmental awareness among the students.

120 ITE students attended the Global Warming seminar. They listened attentively to the 1 hr presentation. Many of them signed up for more information at our booth after the presentation. [Some lecturers later commented that it is rare for the students to be so attentive during lectures. :) ]

Singapore Polytechnic Environment Club leader, Miss Elaine Sam, invited Mr Low to give a 1hr presentation + Q&A to 20 SP Env club students on 07 Oct. SP environment club is having a 3 day event to teach club members on the environment & survival skills such as trekking, topography, outdoor cooking etc.

Ecokidd Childcare center GW talk (06 Oct)

Singapore Veggie Thursday team organized a Happy feet Walk cum Carnival event at Fort Canning Park on 25 Sep. The event aims to encourage people to go veggie on Thursdays to reduce their environmental footprint and to improve their health.

GW Study Group participated in the Happy Feet Event. We have a booth to distribute free Climate change booklets to the public. Our volunteers also dress up in animal costumes to take photos with participants.

We have a story-telling corner to tell kids story on climate change. The kids love our stories. :)

24 presenters in 24 time Zones presented on how climate affected their country.It is broadcasted live online from September 14 to 15, over 24 hours, representing 24 time zones and 13 languages.

Pro-teach Staff Event (01 Sep)

Pro-teach is a well-established company that runs 28 student care center/tution center in Singapore. In the begining of 2011, all Pro-teach centers have adopt a policy to provide plant-based food to their students on Thursdays. [Some centers provide plant-based food more than one day a week.]

On 01 Sep, Pro-teach CEO, Ms Peggy Ong, invited Mr Low, Dr Priya (a homopathic doctor) & Mr George Jacob (President of Vege Society Singapore) to speak to 80 Pro-teach teachers and staffs.

Dr Priya spoke on the Health benefits of a Vege Diet, Mr George spoke on Kindness to animals while Mr Low spoke on Global Warming and Solutions to climate change.

After the presentations, Pro-teach staffs asked questions on Health & Environment during the Q & A session.

During the event, CEO Ms Peggy Ong shared a piece of good news: After Pro-teach's Branch Heads attended the Env & Health talk held in May, many of them realize the impacts our diet have on the environment & on human health, thus they are very supportive of the Veggie Thursday policy. Ms Peggy Ong announced that :
"Out of 28 Pro-Teach branches, 15 are offering plant-based meals twice a week now, 1 branch 3 times a week, 1 branch 4 times a week and 3 branches everyday! Before our May talk, only 8 branches volunteered 2x weekly, the remaining 20 just 1x weekly. The number has since doubled. I await some good news from the branches for more frequent plant-based menu. :) "

Bravo ... That was very encouraging indeed.

Mr Low work with members of Green Club to present on Environment topics at Eunos Primary school during 'Green n Grin Day' on 14 Jul. Club members presented on 8 issues to the entire school cohort. The 8 issues are : Rising Sea level, Deforestation, Protect the Ocean, Animal Factory-farming, Organic farming, Green Energy, World Hunger & Water shortage. Teachers and staffs gave many positive feedbacks after the presentation. Vice-Principal of Eunos primary, Mdm Jayanthi, commented that the presentation was inspiring.

GW study group participate in World Leadership Conference (13 to 15 Jul) organized by Eco-Singapore. In the 3 day conference, 200 international delegates from different parts of the world attend Environment workshops on climate change, energy saving, biodiversity losses presented by esteemed speakers. GW study group member, Miss Koh Ting Ting, presented on how meat industry harms the environment during a Delegates Night held at Soul Club. GW study group also set up a booth at the event venue to spread awareness on GW and Solutions to climate change. Eco-Singapore is one of the youth environment organizations which supports meatless Thursdays to help in the fight against climate change.

Speaker profile:

Mr Low Chip Khoon is the leader of a Global Warming Study Group and a teacher-in-charge of an environment club in a local school. He has researched into the subject of Global Warming since end of 2007. He has share information on GW with schools and interested parties via Assembly talks, Contact time talks, company lunch talks, event talks etc. He has also chaired various environment forums with Polytechnic and secondary school students. To date, he has conducted more than 60 talks on GW. He believes that, provided with the necessary information, many people will choose to adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle to curb global warming & preserve life on the planet.

Dr Priyadarshani is a qualified homoeopath who holds a Bachelors degree in homeopathic medicine and a post graduate fellowship of the Institute of Clinical Research. Summary of Dec 2010 UN Summit

UN COP16 Climate change Summit was held in Mexico Cancun from 29 Nov to 11 Dec 2010.
Delegates from 190 nations participated in the summit and managed to achieve some concrete results.

The following is a summary of the UN Summit’s achievements:
- 190 nations’ representatives agree to set a goal to keep temperature from rising more than 2 Deg Cel above pre-industrial level and asks for a study on strengthening the commitment to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
- A “Green Climate change fund” was set up to administer assistance to poor nations. [e.g Parksitan/ Bangladesh/ Africa etc.] which are already suffering from increase floods / Droughts.
The Fund would be steered by a Board of 24 members evenly chosen from Developed and Developing countries. For the first 3 years [2010 till 2013] the international organization will be overseen by World Bank.
- EU, Japan & US have pledge 30 billion dollars a year to poor nations in immediate assistance. [From 2010 till 2012] & up to 100 billion a year till 2020.

These are substantial achievements as developing nations who are suffering from increased impacts of climate change would now receive aid from the developed countries.
Australian Climate Change Minister Greg Combet called the deal a "historic step forward." Chief US negotiator Todd Stern said the deal "while not perfect, is certainly a good basis for moving forward," voicing hope it would "put the world on a more hopeful path toward a low-emissions and sustainable future."

In the midst of the UN climate summit, an event "The Greenest Heroes Gala" was held on 05 Dec 2010 to honor the green heros who help to reduce climate change.

The event was hosted by Mayor of Cancun, Mr Jaime Hernandez Zaragoza and the Supreme Master Ching Hai international Association.

The Gala was attended by delegates around the world including Mr Jose Marie Figueres Olsen, 44th president of Costa Rica & Mrs Mary Robinson, 7th President of Ireland.
During the Gala, the vegetarian solution to Climate change was discussed and many delegates expressed that they would bring this solution back to their country.

This is a trailer to the environmental movie: "Climate Chaos in the South".
A team of TV crews went to 4 areas that is heavily affected by Global Warming: Africa: Burkina Faso & Togo, South America: Ecuador and Asia: Bangladesh.

They found that climate change is already severly impacting the above regions. Crew members spoke to both local people as well as experts about the ever-increasing danger of poverty in the regions.

These campaigns urges people to go meat-free at least one day a week to protect the environment, conserve the worlds’ resources, to protect the animals & to be Healthy. :>

Going Veggie once-a-week [as a start] make people more aware that there are veggie options around and that preparing veggies meals are easier than preparing meat meals. :> : )

Now-a-days, with all the soy-based mock meat available, a mock-meat veggie meal may even taste very close to the actual meat meal. [So there is even no sacrifice in taste :>]

Speaker profile:
Mr Low Chip Khoon is a teacher in a local school and a leader of a Global Warming Study Group in an Eco-friendly association. He has researched into the subject of Global warming since the end of 2007. Recently, spurred by the urgency of the situation, he has compiled his research information and shared with teachers / colleagues and association members. He has conducted Global warming assembly talks and GW sharing sessions during Contact Time in school. Due to Global Warming, Seas, Rivers,Lakes and underground water reserves in the world are drying up. These impact the livelihoods of hundreds of millions people.
World’s major rivers drying - one-third are gone or going. Groundwater wells for 3 billion people are drying up.

Top 10 global river systems drying, ebbing away:China’s Salween River, Europe’s Danube, South America’s la Plata, North American Rio Grande, India’s Ganges, Pakistan’s Indus, Africa’s Nile and Lake Victoria, Australia’s Murray Darling, Southeast Asia’s Mekong-Lancang, China’s Yangtze … due to dams, over-extraction, overfishing and climate change.
The documentary also spells out the various lakes and rivers in Africa, America, Europe, Asia, India & China that are drying up.

We have to adopt more measures to conserve water and take a hard look at how we use water. The Stockholm water insititute states that 70% of the world's water is used by the agriculture sector with animal agriculture using a large portion of water. In Nov 2009, Lord Stern and Al Gore has urged the world to take more plant-based diet as the animal industry uses excessive amounts of water. [UN report states that producing 1kg of beef requires 15,500 litres of water. Producing 1 kg of maize only needs 900 litres of water.]
We have to heed the call now.

Overgazing & overfarming in Lus plateau [near Si Cuan], have caused servere land degradation. When the land is stripped of vegetation, water washes away top soil which further degrades the land till the land becamea barren area.

Restoration Effort :
1. Stop animal-grazing / Stop farming on the land.
2. Plant vegetation. Build terrance to retain water.
3. Vegetation will slow down water flow.
When enough vegetation grows, streams will form.
More water encourage more vegetation which retains more water [positive cycle]
In 3 to 5 years the land would be restored.

The local community would benefit as they can then farm the land and gain food security. :>

Reforestation in Africa Rwanda restored barren land to one full of vegetation.These protects the wetlands which ensures that enough water can flow to drive the hydro power-station downstream.

The documentary ends with a meaningful question: "Since we can restore the degraded land in China & Africa, which brings vegetation back to the land, and secures the future of the local people [as they can then farm on these lands], Why don't we reforest ALL the degraded land in the world? "

One practical way to limit the fishing industry is to reduce support for the fishing industry.

Fishes contains mercury, heavy metals and other contaminants.[PCBs, Dioxin, Chlorane & DDT] These are harmful to humans and causes many disease such as cancer, heart disease and liver disease.

Alpha-linolenic acid, the only essential omega-3 fatty acid, is found in many vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, and fruits. It is concentrated in flaxseeds and flaxseed oil and also found in oils such as canola, soybean, walnut, and wheat germ. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in nuts, seeds, and soy products, as well as beans, vegetables, and whole grains.28,29 Corn, safflower, sunflower, and cottonseed oils are generally low in omega-3s. Fish consumption is by no means the only way to ensure adequate intake of omega-3 fatty acids.

Recently, more Authorities on Climate change has given voice to the less-meat / More Veg Solution to curb climate change.

In Oct, Lord Stern, a former chief economist of the World Bank& author of the 2006 Stern Review, has requested the world to go veg to curb climate change.

Lord Stern, believes that the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December should call for an increase in the price of meat and other foods that contribute to climate change.

In an interview with "The Times", he said: “Meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the world’s resources. A vegetarian diet is better.”

On Mar 2009, there is a conference of Climate Scientists in Copenhagen Denmark.

The scientists studied the latest data and discussed about the effects of climate change on planet Earth.

The following is a summary of their findings:
- Global sea level could rise up to 1 m by the end of the century. Affecting at least 600 million pple.
- Global temp could rise by 5 to 6 deg by the end of the century!!
- Even a 2 degrees rise in temp could lead to 'Carbon time Bomb' as more premafrost in Arctic melts and release vast amounts of Methane/ CO2 into the atmosphere. [even a 2 deg rise in temp is not really safe.]

During the Mar 2009 Copenhagen conference of Climate Scientist, NEAA [Netherland Environmental Assessment Agency] proposed a low-cost solution that would save the world 50% to 80% of the US$40 trillion required to halt climate change.

The proposed Solution is "A Global shift to a Low-meat diet".

According to UN FAO 2006 Livestock Long Shadow report,
70% of the world's agriculture land is used for the livestock industry. [including land for grazing, land to grow feed crops for the animals, and land for the animal industries.]

If the world shifts to a low-meat diet [a diet that we have 30 years back. Mostly plant-based with a little meat on special occasions.], the meat production could be reduced by 1/2.
Thus, the 70% agriculture land used by livestock industries could be shrinked by 1/2 to about 35%.
This would free up 35% of agriculture land which could be used to grow forest. The forest would help to absorb CO2 and protect water resources.

Scientists are increasing aware that CO2 is only halve the picture in the Global Warming Situation. Another GW gas that they found is Methane. CH4 which has 72 times the Global Warming Potiential of CO2 [ CH4 warms the atmosphere 72 times more than CO2] over a 20 year peroid.

The good news is that CH4 is a short term gas. Most of it would cycle out of the environment within 10 years. [ CO2 will cycle out of the env in hundreds of years]

Thus, if we cut off the methane production. CH4 would cycle out
within 10 years and the planet would have 'immediate cooling'

For many years, the governments in the world have been subsidising the meat industry heavily because they thought that the meat diet is good for their citizen's health.
The subsidies in US and EU [European Union] are so large that it amounts to billions of US / EU dollars.

However, in recent years, the world governments became aware that the meat industries are a serious treat to the environment. They also realize that it is not rationale to use large amount of tax payers money to subsidise large-scale animal agriculture that drives deforestation, pollutes the water/land, deplete the world's food & water resources and emits lots of green house gases.

Thus, some government bodies such as European Union have discussed and decided to reduce the amount of subsidise that is given to the meat industry:

Hi friends,

Concern about the recent Swine Flu, I did some research into this issue.

In a 2005 World Watch Paper: "Happier meals: Rethinking the global meat industry", produced by World watch institute, the paper already warned of such an epidemic. The 90-page paper studies the impact of factory farms on animals, human and the environment and includes a chapter on "Factory farms contribution to the Spreading of Disease".
In that chapter, the paper states that the unsanitary conditions, close concentration and genetic uniformity of animals in large factory farms facilitate the emergence and spread of new diseases.

The paper observed that Avian flu has been around for centuries but Only during the last 10 years has the disease really changed, mutating into a form that can jump the species barrier and affect humans.
It says that Avian flu is not confined to birds.
"Far more worrisome is the finding that avian flu can spread directly to pigs and to humans. In places with high concentration of pigs and chickens, pigs can serve as a mixing vessel for the virus because of their genetic similarity to humans."
& Now the world is experiencing pig flu, which is a mutated version of a common strain H1N1 that infected pigs. The mutated strain has genetic elements of avian, swine and human influenza.

The World Watch paper also warns that
"Factory farms provide the perfect conditions for disease to spread from livestock to people and epidemiologists are warning of a potentially massive outbreak of disease in congested urban areas near factory farms. "
And now we are having swine flu that spreads from the factory farms in Mexico to the citizens of Mexico and now to other parts of the world.

In short, factory farms with it's high concentration of animals and unsanitary conditions are a fertile ground for viruses to mutate and to spread. Factory farms not only produce large amounts of manure that pollutes the environment but also contributes significantly to the formation and spreading of new diseases.

Considering the above fact, please DO NOT support the factory farms.
Sadly, most of the world's meat are generated by factory farms.
The World Watch paper states that in 2004, Factory farms generated 74% of the worlds poultry products [mostly chicken/ some ducks & geese], 50% of the world's pork, 43% of the world's beef & 68% of the world's eggs. The 2009 figures could only be higher. :<
The production of meat has a very high environmental cost and meat can be as cheap as it is today because of the huge amount of subsidize that is given to the factory farms.
Factory farms are there because of the high demand for meat in the world.
Please make an environmental message today,

DO NOT support the Factory Farms.

For your personal health and the health of the Planet,
Please take less meat, eat more vege.

UN IPCC chairman Doctor Rajendra Pachuri urges the world to "start taking plant-based [vege] meals at least one day a week. And then further reduce [meat consumption] from there."
With Avian flu, swine flu, and all the other animal-related diseases, there is more reason to heed his call now.

Methane Time Bomb

As the Arctic sea warms up, the Methane hydrates beneath the ocean is melting , releasing millions of tons of Methane [a green house gas 23 times GWP that of CO2] into the atmosphere.

Recently, a Sep report from UK states that a Russian research ship has discovered that methane is bubbling up from thousands of square mile in the Siberian continental shelf.

This is a phenomenal that the scentist are greatly worried about, because there is huge amounts of Methane hydrates beneath the Arctic oceans. [A Newspaper report shows that there is about 400 gigatons of Methane locked in the Arctic tandra.

If a portion of those were to melt, it would trigger "Run away global warming". :/ :/ :X

The meltdown would lead to more global warming, causing less ice, warmer sea and in turn more meltdown. It is a positive feedback loop that acts upon itself. :(

The situation is urgent now, we have to do all we can to reduce green house gas emissions
now. Including switching to a vegetarian diet which will take away 20% green house gas emission by the livestock industries, reduce deforestation, and reduce environmental destruction.

A climate scientist once said that if we lost the Amazon, we lost the fight against climate change.

And yet destruction of the Amazon rainforest goes on [according to an article I've read, deforestation of the Amazon is at the rate of 7 football fields a minute!!! 2000 trees are cut down a min]

Much of it was to provide land for cattle grazing and to produce crops to feed the cattles. :( :(

extracts:The report shows that Russian polar scientists have strong evidence that the first stages of Methane Hydrates melting are underway.In the permafrost bottom of the 200-meter-deep sea, enormous stores of gas hydrates lie dormant in mighty frozen layers of sediment. The carbon content of the ice-and-methane mixture here is estimated at 540 billion tons.

"This submarine hydrate was considered stable until now," says the Russian biogeochemist Natalia Shakhova.The permafrost has grown porous, says Shakhova, and already the shelf sea has become "a source of methane passing into the atmosphere."

The Russian scientists have estimated what might happen when this Siberian permafrost-seal thaws completely and all the stored gas escapes. They believe the methane content of the planet's atmosphere would increase twelvefold. "The result would be catastrophic global warming," say the scientists.

Part 2 of Interview. David talks about the people in the developed nations using too much resources of the planet. [Big house, huge spendings, lots of waste.] Developed nations have to reduce consumption. Humans have thought that consumption will lead to happiness. But actually it's harmonous human relationship that leads to happiness. Endless consumption has lead to huge environmental destruction.
Human have to put a value to everything. A CEO of a tree cutting company says that 'A tree has no economic value if it stays in a forest. It only has economic value if it is being cut down.' But we forget that when the tree is in the forest, it is a tremendous help to the environment. It absorbs CO2 from the air and place O2 into the atmosphere, it's roots hold the soil and prevent erosion, it provides shade and is a home to many animals. But all that has no economic value and so they cut the trees down. :( We really have to relook at our economic sense and put a priceless value on the trees, forests, clean water, coral reefs so that we will conserve these natural resources for the balance of the Ecosystems on Earth. : /
