On 19 Oct, Earth Society joined in the online INSPIRE session (via MS Teams) at 11.45 am. We conducted an online “Biodiversity Loss” talk for CommScope staffs from 12 pm to 12.50 pm. The INSPIRE session attracted 100 staff across India, South East Asia, North East Asia, India, Australia and New Zealand to attend the session.

In the Biodiversity Loss talk, we presented on Biodiversity Loss, Overfishing, Deforestation, Climate change and Factory farming.

Our planet Earth is facing the 6th Mass Extinction driven by Humans. Up to 1 million species of animals and plants are at the risk of going Extinct. From WWF Living Planet Index report, 68% of wildlife are lost in the past 50 years. The Biodiversity Loss is driven by Overfishing, Deforestation, Habitat loss and Climate change.

We recommended Solutions such as reduce Fish consumption, reduce Animal Factory farming, Meatless Mondays, protection of Ocean and Forest Eco-systems etc. If everyone on the planet consumes resources as Singaporeans do, we will need 3 planets to support our consumption pattern. We need to reduce our consumption pattern to keep our needs within the limit of 1 Earth.

CommScope staffs listened to the talk attentively. They actively participate in the Q and A session at the end of the talk.

Sustainability talk @ Infineon Technologies (Mar)

Mr Max Pay from Infineon Technologies Asia Pacific Pte Ltd invited Earth Society to conduct a Sustainability talk for their staff on 22 Mar. This is the 3rd time that Infineon Technologies has invited us to talk to their staffs. This year, Infineon Technologies focus topic is : Sustainability, “Use Less for More” (e.g. How to contribute more as employees in a MNC company and as individuals?)

On 22 Mar, Earth Society team reached Infineon Technologies Auditorium at 9 am. Infineon Technologies organized refreshments and photo-shoot taking for about 120 staffs from 9 am to 9.30 am.

At 9.30 am, Mdm Yan Huey Miin, IFAP CFO (Senior management), gave an opening speech for the staffs. Mdm Yan spoke about how Climate change has altered the weather pattern in Singapore (we experienced many days of heavy rainfall during the Chinese New Year period in Jan). Mdm Yan informed the staffs on the Eco-measures the company had adopted to save electricity and reduce Climate change.

Earth Society conducted a Sustainability talk for the staffs from 9.50 am to 10.30 am.

We presented on Biodiversity Loss, Mass Extinction, Overfishing, Deforestation, Climate change and Factory farming. We featured WWF 2020 Living Planet Index report which shows that 68% of wildlife were lost from 1970s to 2016. We showed that there are 8 billion humans on the planet, but we kill 1,500 billion fishes and 80 billion land animals for food each year. We touched on issues such as Global Warming, reduce Fish consumption, reduce Factory farming, Meatless days and conservation of the world’s ocean and forest.

We also showed that if everyone on the planet consumes resources as Singaporeans do, we will need 3 planets to sustain our consumption habits. We need to reduce our consumption pattern to keep it within the limits of 1 planet.

We suggested that companies can cater vegetarian meals for staffs during green events, save electricity, organize tree planting/ beach cleaning events to contribute to the environmental movement. Individuals can adopt meatless days, avoid eating tuna/beef/ mutton, save electricity, take public transport to protect the environment.

We also spoke about how going Vegan may benefit the planet environmentally and help individuals improve personal health.

Infineon Technologies staffs listened attentively to the talk.

Feedback from Staffs:

Global Warming and effects of climate change is obvious and impacting us. The increasing intensity of rainfall, the floods, the big temperature differences we are experiencing are reminders to us that we need to act now, concertedly and together. We have to live with some inconveniences in our daily lives to contribute to green movement.                              - Yan Huey Miin, IFAP CFO, Infineon Technologies Asia Pacific

The talk gave provided me valuable insight to the information about Biodiversity that are generally under-reported by the media. Global warming for me has always been the responsibility of the large companies and industries rather than an individual purpose. However, through this talk I was able to understand there are more ways to contribute that I didn’t knew of just because I was under-informed. And even though we must face some inconvenience to our daily lives by adjusting our lifestyle to contribute, but I believe a small step forward goes a long way in the future.                                     - Max Pay, staff, Infineon Technologies Asia Pacific

The talk was very informative, engaging and thought-providing. The speaker explained the scientific facts about biodiversity loss/ global warming in a clear and concise manner. Suggestion to include more games/ quizzes during the talk to better engage the audience.  - Tan Min Yi, staff

The meeting is meaningful and brings scientific knowledge to me, I really hope everyone can do small things to help protect our planet and make human development sustainable.  - Liu Jia, staff
